7 negative health effects of excessive work

If you are the last person leaves the office or if you consistently work overtime, you will see overtime benefits by wage increases, but all those extra hours of work affect your health.

A recent study found that those who work overtime, who have a work program for at least 11 hours a day, have a higher risk of developing depression than those who work an average of 7-8 hours. This finding joins the research evidence which shows that health problems resulting in this way could be quite serious.

Fortunately, the weekend offers everyone respite for two days to relieve stress during the week. Here are some of the ways that excessive work may influence a person’s health, but also some ways of leisure that can be spent in a more relaxing style.

This disorder can manifest in people who completed their tasks at late hours, working 11 hours or more per day. Working long time per day leads to a shorter time for personal care, to enjoy family, to make exercise and healthy eating.

It is important that at least the weekend to take advantage of free time and during the week, however, experts recommend that for long term preservation of mental health to get home at reasonable hours when you can.

The extended sitting on the chair

If your idea of relaxation involves sitting on the couch, you may need to review. Weekend is a time where you should do physical activities to recreate.

People who are sitting all day during working hours in front of an office should know that sedentary habits are not just good for health. There are several studies that have made the association between health problems such as diabetes, obesity, cancer, stroke and even death and inactivity.

Researchers found that people who spend most of the day while sitting are at increased risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver than those who are active throughout the day.


Most people should sleep between seven and nine hours per night. But the reality is different: most of us do not sleep more than six hours and a half. The figures may be even lower for those who work too much.

Researchers have shown that in the latter case, sleep quality is reduced. The health effects of poor sleep include memory problems, weight gain, irritability, mood changes, serious cardiovascular problems, the possibility of cancer, etc.

Try to take advantage of the weekend in order to adjust sleep. Try not to change too much sleeping – waking time with more than an hour and sleep 8-9 hours. Keep the same amount of sleep during the week. A good night sleep can improve memory and learning. Quite many of those who are asleep or working excessively are sleepy at work.

On the other hand, try to keep the sleeping place as it is, not to become a work area. Otherwise, your brain will be stimulated and will be more difficult to sleep. If you look at the computer before sleep, the brain will be re-stimulated by the bright light and sleep will be elusive.

Cardiovascular problems

Working overtime increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. At least some of these problems seem to be common in people who work excessively. Type A personality (which includes people who supra-stress whatever reason) is most common among those who work extra.

For these people there is the highest incidence of heart disease, they work even if sick, demonstrated that it increases the risk of heart attacks. It is therefore important to focus on healthy eating such as fish, lean meats, fruits and vegetables, physical activity, sufficient rest and relaxation.


A quarter of honor considered the main work stressors in their lives. Workload, daily movements, relationship with colleagues and endless daily tasks can cause the serious health problems.

Stress stimulates the body to produce more hormones that can increase blood pressure, heart rate and blood sugar levels. Over time, due to the stress may occur: mental health problems, obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and skin problems, among others.

As a solution would be during the weekend, at least, try to enjoy the things you miss during the week.

Eye strain

Watching a computer screen all day is the most common cause of overtraining eye at work. 64-90% of computer users report that experiencing different symptoms such as headaches, dry eyes, blurred vision, etc.

During weekend, try to give time to rest. Turn off the TV, laptop and use the phone only to make calls. If you sit in front of a computer for long periods of time, you can apply the 20/06/20 rule every 20 minutes look at the screen about 6 feet for at least 20 seconds. There are even applications for certain browsers that might remind you to take a short break.


Can you believe that you make your boss a favor by working overtime, but the truth is that this can be associated with risk of mental decline or dementia. A recent study found that there is a possible negative effect on cognitive performance in middle age people with additional working.

Risk of dementia can be reduced by maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise and social interaction, which is beneficial for both body and mind. Should your life be a balance and avoid excesses of any kind.
