More and more Americans are already using anti-depressants, according to a new study.

Anti-depressant drugs are specific class of drugs which are used to treat depression and anxiety. This class of drug has been widely used across the globe, especially by the Americans. According to a new study, in every ten (10) Americans, there are more than one (1) using anti-depressant medications. The age group which usually takes this medicine belongs to people aged 18 to 44 years old.

According to the National Institute for Mental Health, Antidepressants are medicines that treat depression. Your doctor can prescribe them for you. They can improve your mood, sleep, appetite and concentration. It may take several weeks for them to help. There are several types of antidepressants. You and your doctor may have to try several before finding what works best for you.

Medicines sometimes cause unwanted side effects. For example, when you first start your antidepressant you may feel tired, have trouble sleeping or feel sick to your stomach. The side effects usually go away after a short time. Tell your doctor if you have any side effects. You should also let your doctor know if you take any other medicines, vitamins or herbal supplements.

The popping of cases involving Americans who are using anti-depressants are because individuals who would like to deal with their stresses. Also, non-psychiatrists health care providers are increasingly willing to provide prescriptions to those people who would like to take anti-depressant drugs. Most of them took the prescription from a general doctor rather than a psychiatrist.

This implicates that many people are taking the drug to deal with their minor stresses in life. Although, there are many individuals who ask for prescriptions, it does not necessarily mean that they are taking the medications improperly. However, these patients must be advised of the potential long-term effects of these drugs which may have health risks in the future.

The research involves analysis of data dated 2005 to 2008. There are about over 10,000 Americans who served as respondents of the study. According to the study, there was a dramatic rise of Americans using anti-depressant drugs. About four-hundred (400) per cent increase was the noted rise of cases from the year of 2005 to 2008, as to the eleven (11) per cent of cases during the 1988 to 1994 time period. This significant increase was believed to be tied up with the US approval of the use of Eli Lilly’s Prozac or fluoxetine drug.

It was also reported that women are using anti-depressants more than men do. In addition, the whites are more likely to take these anti-depressant drugs, as compared to the blacks.

Moreover, people are becoming and becoming more dependent to these drugs in dealing with their stresses. Some of the respondents reported that they have been using the drug for about two years and others reported that they have been using the drug for 10 years almost. This is bothering because people should be well informed about the side effects of these drugs and worst of its adverse effects. People must be wary of taking any drug because this can mean development of certain disease in the long run. Furthermore, consultations to psychiatrists are important and necessary before taking these anti-depressant drugs.
