Canned Soup Consumers, Increase in BPA Amounts

“You are what you eat” is just a very simple quote, but actually embodies significant meaning in terms of a health of an individual. It is said that nutrition plays a very important role in terms of the functioning of the human body. It is in the foods where the body gets sufficient and enough quantity of nutrients needed by the human body in order to function properly and effectively.

Hence, people should be wary and vigilant about the kinds of foods that they are consuming every day. These foods may affect them in one way or another especially if the foods that they have consumed are contaminated with certain microorganisms or with harmful chemicals. According to a new study, those individuals who had consumed canned soup had about 1,200 per cent of BPA or Bisphenol A present in their urine as compared to those who had consumed fresh soup.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an organic compound which is used to make polycarbonate plastic resins, epoxy resins, and other products. This is usually found in the linings of plastics, canned foods, and cash register slips. In 2010, other countries such as Canada had declared that Bisphenol A is a toxic substance because of certain researches and studies conducted which shows that this substance actually causes increase health risks. In the same year, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had released a report for the increasing concern about the exposure of fetus, young children, and infant to the said chemical compound.

The new study which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association was forerun by researchers from Harvard University. It was the first research to quantify the amounts of BPA in the human body right after the ingestion of the certain food products most especially those canned foods. The study quantifies the levels of BPA in the human body by using micrograms per liter of urine.

The study involved the analysis and assessment of data gathered from about 75 individuals who participated the study. These individuals were allowed to eat about 12 ounce servings of either the fresh or canned soup form a specific period of time which is 5 days. Also, researchers had advised the study participants not to change their regular eating habits during the study.

Moreover, the researchers conducted urine analysis of the study participants and revealed that those individuals who consumed canned soup had about 1,221 higher levels of BPA as compared to those who had consumed fresh soup.
