Cymbalta is a SSNRI (Selective Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor) while Paxil is a SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor).

Contraindications When Taking Cymbalta and Paxil

When taking Cymbalta, the following conditions must be assessed and evaluated for:

-          Bipolar disorders (manic-depressive);

-          Close Angled Glaucoma;

-          Suicidal attempts;

-          MAOIs, especially when taking within the last 14 days;

-          Kidney and liver disorders; and

-          Pregnancy and lactation.

The following conditions must be evaluated before being prescribed with Paxil:

-          Personal or family history of bipolar disorder;

-          People receiving ECT;

-          Heart, kidney and liver diseases;

-          Suicidal attempts;

-          Seizures and convulsions;

-          Allergic reaction to similar drugs; and

-          Pregnancy and lactation.

How To Take Cymbalta vs. Paxil?

Cymbalta and Paxil need to be taken by mouth with a glass full of water. Never crush, chew or break the drug. Both drugs can be taken with or without food. Never stop taking these medications abruptly as these may lead to withdrawal signs and symptoms.

When taking the liquid form of the drug, be sure to use a medicine cup instead of a regular kitchen spoon as it may not yield the exact amount of drug.

Special Precautions Before Taking Cymbalta vs. Paxil?

The following drugs should be avoided when taking Cymbalta:

-          Diet/ appetite suppressant drugs;

-          MAOIs;

-          SSRIs;

-          Tryptophan;

-          Venlafaxine; and

-          Procarbazine.

As for taking Paxil, the following drugs may cause interactions:

-          MAOIs;

-          SSRI drugs;

-          Tryptophan;

-          Procarbazine;

-          Medications for anxiety, depression and psychosis.

-          NSAIDs for pain; and

-          Medicines for migraine or triptan drugs;

Side Effects When Taking Cymbalta vs. Paxil

Both Cymbalta and Paxil may exhibit similar side effects. These are the following:

-          Allergic reaction to the drugs;

-          Fast and irregular heart rate;

-          Confusion and hallucinations;

-          Seizures and convulsions;

-          Suicidal thoughts; and

-          Abnormal bleeding and bruising

Cymbalta may exhibit unique side effects like diarrhea and vomiting, fever and hyperactivity and feeling of losing control.

Similarly, Paxil may also show the following unique side effects like painful and prolonged erection in men, trouble urinating and bloody stools.
