Dental radiography is a picture of the teeth and jaws, obtained by exposure to X-ray. Dental radiographs, essential element of dental diagnosis are performed in order to identify certain details undetectable during a normal examination, caries in early stages, cysts and granulomas, teeth fractures, jaw fractures, tumors, included teeth.

This dentist labor therefore leads to more accurate diagnosis and also helps your doctor determine treatment success in all phases of work.

The most used type of dental radiograph is called retroalveolar radiography, which is a small film, that can be viewed 2-3 teeth items. X-ray result is issued on the spot within minutes.

Dental radiography shows no health risks

Contrary to popular belief of the less knowledgeable patients, dental radiography shows no health risks. The patient must understand the limitation imposed by the lack of X-rays and that the benefits of information obtained through X-ray, exceed with much the risk given exposure to a minimum dose of ionizing radiation.

Today, many offices have purchased new performance equipment, equipped with several filter systems for X rays. Using modern techniques of radiation decreases the risk of dental radiographs to near zero. In the current safe conditions, the amount of X-ray received during an examination is very small and the risk is negligible.

Dental radiography shows a much lower risk than an unidentified and untreated dental problem. Radiation dose received during dental radiography is measured in “rem” or units “sievert”.

Currently, we expose daily to radiation from various natural sources (atmospheric, cosmic, terrestrial) as well as artificial sources (microwave, TV, monitor, mobile phone, and so on). However in these cases the amount of radiation is much, much higher than that received when performing one or more dental radiographs, whether digital or film.

Of all the X-ray investigations, dental radiography is the least radiation, considering that the radiation dose emitted is only of 0.02 mSv. Here is a simple, but very relevant comparison:

Maximum permissible dose is 20 mSv / year.

Additional, we receive an amount of radiation from artificial sources, but we can’t calculate it as overall study because the amount varies depending on our lifestyle – time spent in front of the monitor, cell phone, etc.

Special attention should be given to pregnant and lactating mothers. It is important to remember that dental x-rays do not affect embryo organogenesis and birth process. Radiation from dental X-ray machines, as mentioned before, are very small, targeted towards the teeth and their reflection towards areas considered at risk (abdomen, ovaries, breasts) are protected by a lead apron especially designed.

However, as an additional precaution, it is advisable to avoid as much as possible carrying radiography during the first and last trimester.

To note that in dental radiology centers lead apron (apron designed especially for protection), is provided with a collar to protect the thyroid gland and will be used without exception.
