Diarrhea after a bowel surgery is quite common as the patients are prone to infections.Certain drugs and antibodies which are given to the patients can cause disturbance in the intestines which can cause diarrhea.
Short Bowel Syndrome: Short Bowel Syndrome is a condition where by surgery a large portion of small intestine is removed.It may also happen due to Crohn’s disease and the symptoms could be diarrhea, weightloss, feeling of tiredness, legs can also swell.
Short Bowel Syndrome can be examined by performing tests such as X-ray of small intestine and blood count test.
Diet and Treatment:
You need to include a high calorie diet which includes minerals, proteins and vitamins.
Supplements such as Folic acid and Vitamin B-12 needs to be taken.

Sometimes intravenous fluids are also given to the patients.
Dumping Syndrome occurs due to gastric surgery.In this syndrome the food which is taken moves really fast in the stomach and enters the small intestine without being digested.This condition happens as soon as the food is taken.The symptoms include cramping, diarrhea, vomiting , feeling of weakness and tiredness, sweating and dizziness.People who have Dumping Syndrome or Rapid Gastric Emptying as it is often called suffer from low blood sugar as the food is absorbed by the small intestine very fast into the blood.
To diagnose dumping syndrome the physician goes through the various symptoms shown by the patients who undergo gastric surgery.Sometimes the physician may require you to undergo Barium fluoroscopy and Radionuclide Scintigraphy.
People suffering from gastric dumping syndrome should take meals in regular intervals.
Should avoid simple sugars, diet should be low in carbohydrates and should take food rich in fiber.
Drink water in between the meals and not with the meal.
Medicines such as octreotide, cholestyramine slows the process of digestion.
Surgery is advised in severe cases.
Diarrhea after Gallbladder Surgery: Surgery of gallbladder is done to remove gall stones and as such there are no side affects of the surgery. The recovery of the person undergoing through the surgery depends upon the type of surgery being performed on him/her. The gallbladder stores bile which is being released by liver and when there is no gallbladder bile is deposited directly into intestine after eating and this causes diarrhea in some patients and this can go away in few months after the surgery.
Avoid eating high calorie food as it might severe diarrhea in patients.
High fat dairy products should be avoided as much as you can.
No fried stuffs.
Divide your meals in small quantities and take them throughout the day.Don’t consume large meal at a time.
