Effective Treatments in Dealing With IBS

Irritable Bowel Syndrome can be devastating… to say the least. With IBS, the toilet will become your best friend because you will be spending most of the day’s time sitting on it during an IBS attack. In IBS, a person becomes either too constipated or diarrheic depending on how the intestines react to the triggers. Also, a person with IBS will experience abdominal cramping which may be very discomforting, as well as gas, bloating, vomiting, loss of appetite and weight loss.

How Does IBS Happen?

The exact cause of IBS remains to be unknown, the reason why it is considered as a syndrome, rather than a recognized disease. IBS is simply defined as the hypersensitivity of the intestinal walls to various triggers which may be physical, psychological or emotional in nature. In terms of physical causes, IBS may result from food intake, depending on the food trigger that we eat. Food triggers may include fatty foods, high cholesterol foods, and those which are strong to the taste. Psychological and emotional causes include excitement, anxiety, nervousness and stress.

Signs and Symptoms of IBS

As mentioned earlier, IBS may result to alternating recurrences of diarrhea and constipation. Similarly, IBS may also result to loss of appetite, weight loss, dehydration, weakness and easy fatigability and many other signs and symptoms.

Pain Relievers/ Muscle Relaxants. Muscle relaxants are prescribed in people with acute attacks of IBS. Since our intestines and abdomen are built of smooth muscles, muscle relaxants are helpful in dealing with the abnormal contractions of the smooth muscles of the intestines. Pain relievers can also lessen the severity of discomforts brought about by IBS.

Anti-Inflammatory Medications. Since irritable bowel syndrome also results in the inflammation of the colon and intestinal walls, anti-inflammatory medications like NSAIDS, corticosteroids and the like may be useful in treating the attacks of this condition.

Fluid Intake. IBS can result to too much fluid loss since diarrhea can occur for long term. As such, replacing the lost amount of fluid by keeping yourself hydrated all throughout the day is important. Drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water daily is good-but that is speaking of healthy people. Drinking more than ten glasses of water daily is recommended if a person is at risk for dehydration. Furthermore, drinking fluids boosted with electrolytes can restore and maintain one’s energy level to survive a day’s work.

Dietary Fiber Intake. Who says fiber is just for the prevention of colon cancer? That is not true! Fibers can work a lot of wonders—that is applicable in almost all forms of GI disorders and conditions. Dietary fiber can lessen incidences of constipation and diarrhea. Furthermore, it cleans our intestines of the toxic materials that contribute to its being hypersensitive.

Nutritional Supplements. Taking nutritional supplements is important since this can provide additional energy, multivitamins and minerals to our body—those which foods that we eat cannot provide. Since food intake may become limited due to one’s sensitivity to foods, it is best to always carry a pill of multivitamins and nutritional supplements.
