Description:
Fats help absorb essential vitamins, maintain cell membrane structure and function and ensure the integrity of the immune system. They are a concentrated source of energy, providing twice as many calories per gram as carbohydrates and proteins. One type of excess fat – like saturated fats or trans-fatty acids may increase blood cholesterol levels with risk of coronary heart disease.

Recommendations:
Limit fat intake to 20% to 35% of total daily calories. Choose healthy fats from sources such as nuts, olive, canola or peanut oil.
