Fibromyalgia: Tips on how to relieve pain and other symptoms

Fibromyalgia is a long term affection that causes chronic muscle pain, fatigue, stiffness, sleep disturbances, and tender points. Until now the exact cause of fibromyalgia has not been discovered, but doctors believe that somehow the central nervous system is supersensitive and reacts painful to stimuli that should normally be perceived as not painful. Some scientists link the onset of this affection with traumas or psychological distress.

Here are a few tips on how pain and other fibromyalgia symptoms could be relieved:

1. Some natural supplements and herbs seem to be effective with helping the patient control the affection. For improving the sleep and reducing pain 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) can be used with good tolerance in most of the cases. Supplements that contain melatonin have also been proven to have a benefic effect upon relieving pain and normalizing the sleep rhythm. As patients suffering of fibromyalgia often associate depression to their basic affection, St. John’s wort can be used for improving the situation.

In some cases of fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome can be associated too, and for treating the symptoms given by this last mentioned affection, people can use probiotics.

2. Alternative treatments like acupuncture and massage or chiropractic care can do wonders with fibromyalgia pain and discomfort.

3. Exercising. Even though exercising is hard for fibromyalgia sufferers, and it takes all their energy away for one day, it has been proven that gentle exercising can reduce pain and stiffness that is so bothering in fibromyalgia. Swimming could be a good idea for those who know how to practice this sport, but again I recommend that you take things slowly.

4. A diet is also benefic for relieving some of the fibromyalgia symptoms. A lot of patients have declared that by following a low carbohydrate diet they can feel a lessening of their symptoms.

5. Topic medication. Talk to your doctor and see what type of medication suits you best and which one helps you control better your pain. As nowadays there are a lot of topic medications that give instant pain relief for fibromyalgia you can find a suitable treatment for your particular case. Some more serious medication for relieving pain include Tylenol, Advil, Darvocet-N, Tramaden and even injection of local anesthetic into the tender and trigger points.

6. Heating pads. When you are in pain, you can try on applying warm pads on your painful body areas, and you will observe that you will feel better fast.

  3. i suffer with this condition and it is terrible i wake up in pain and through out the day im in constant pain i cannot take it washing up the dishes is so painful its like having someone stab me in the back over and over i hate it i just wish at 23 i dint have to suffer so much i feel for anyone with this condition :-(
