Those who believe that fish oil has many qualities should inform themselves even further. The latest laboratory studies question the general advantages of using fish oil, especially property, to prevent heart attack in people who are at risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Fish oil supplements have proved to be some of the most often used commercially available diet drugs, in part because medical research have linked diets rich in fish and low possibilities of developing heart disease.

Clinical trials and research

A new large-scale report, grouping and analysis of clinical trials involving thousands of patients, found that taking supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids do not reduce the risk of triggering further cardiovascular problems in patients who already suffer from cardiovascular disease.

Research has involved only the highest quality studies and included a total of 20,485 patients with a history of cardiovascular disease.

Cardiac patients in clinical trials were treated with purified fish oil supplements for at least a year and the aim was to determine whether omega-3 fatty acids had any effect on subsequent risk of major cardiovascular problems such as heart attack, stroke, angina and heart failure.

Analyzes have found that there isn’t sufficient evidence to demonstrate the protective effect against future cardiovascular events in a significant number of heart patients, subjects in these studies.

However, researchers note that studies included in the analysis was not performed for a period of time long enough to prove the real impact of constant oil consumption on the long term. It was also noted that the use of fish oil may not have any protective effect in people who have ever suffered from heart disease.

Currently, there is little evidence to confirm that taking fish oil supplements or reinforces protects heart health in healthy adults. In addition, experts say eating fish rather than fish oil supplements.

This alternative would be much healthier because proteins are better for health than the processed foods or red meat. Therefore, a diet rich in oily fish (at least two servings per week) can make a difference on long term.

The efficiency of fish oil

- It maintains a normal triglyceride limit. The high triglycerides values are associated with cardiovascular disease and untreated diabetes.

To reduce risk of heart disease, the doctors believe it is important to keep triglycerides level in a normal limit. It usually recommended increasing physical activity and limiting the amount of fat in the diet to reduce triglyceride number.

- Treatment of heart disease. Fish oil may maintain cardiovascular health of people who have suffered from heart disease. People who are already have heart disease, may decrease their risk of death by the consumption of fish oil.

Although not all researchers agree, some of them believe that fish oil might be more effective in reducing the number of fatal heart attacks than a group of drugs used in some common way to lower cholesterol.

- Improvement of rheumatoid arthritis. Fish oil alone or in combination with some drugs seem to help people with rheumatoid arthritis to quickly overcome morning stiffness.

For those who take fish oil, may be necessary to use fewer pain medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

- Relief of menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea). The use of fish oil combined with vitamin B12 or independent, seems to alleviate menstrual pain and reduce the need for pain painkillers such as NSAIDs.

- Treatment of attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity in children (ADHD). It seems that by taking fish oil the skills of thinking and behavior in children diagnosed with ADHD can be improved.

- Treatment of Raynaud’s syndrome. There is some evidence that use of fish oil can improve cold tolerance in people with Raynaud’s syndrome, as usual, but those who suffer from Raynaud’s syndrome due to a disease called progressive systemic sclerosis apparently can’t enjoy the benefits fish oil supplements.

- Prevention triggering strokes. Moderate consumption of fish (once or twice a week) appear to reduce the risk of developing stroke by more than 27%. However this is not decreased in those who consume too little fish and use aspirin for stroke prevention.

On the other hand, high consumption of fish (more than 46 grams per day) seems to double the risk of stroke.

- Treatment of osteoporosis. The use of fish oil alone or in combination with calcium and evening primrose oil seems to slow the pace of bone loss and increase bone density in the thigh bone (femur), and spine in elderly people suffering from osteoporosis.

- Prevention of hardening of the arteries. Fish oil appears to slow or reverse the easy evolution of atherosclerosis in the arteries serving the heart (coronary arteries), but not in arteries through which blood is carried to the head or heart (carotid arteries).

- Treatment of kidney problems. Long-term use of fish oil (two years), 4-8 grams daily, may slow the loss of renal function in patients with increased risk of developing kidney disease called IgA nephropathy and may reduce the amount of protein in the urine of people who suffering from renal disease due to diabetes.

- Improvement of bipolar disorder. Combination of fish oil supplements with regular treatments for bipolar disorder seems to improve symptoms of depression and increase distance manifestations between episodes of depression. However it seems that fish oil does not improve manic symptoms in people with bipolar disorder.

- Treatment of psychosis. People who use supplements may help prevent psychosis. Research had only subjects younger than 25 years.

- Losing weight. Some evidence shows that eating fish regularly helps in weight loss and decreasing the amount of blood sugar levels in overweight people with high blood pressure.

- Reduced risk of endometrial cancer. For this it is necessary to consume two servings of fatty fish per week.

- Decreased risk of developing eye diseases associated with aging.

- Reduce the risk of re-blocking of blood vessels after cardiac or catheterization bypass surgery. Fish oil appears to decrease by up to 26% the risk when administered for one month before the procedure and another month after surgery. When it is taken less than one month before angioplasty, fish oil does not help protect blood vessels.

- Recurrence of spontaneous abortion in women with antiphospholipid syndrome.

- Blood pressure balance and preventing kidney problems after heart transplantation. Use of fish oil seems to stimulate kidney function and helps control blood pressure long after heart transplantation.

- Preventing impairment of kidney function and blood pressure caused by the use of cyclosporine.

- Improvement of movement disorders in children suffering from dyspraxia. Use of oral fish oil in combination with evening primrose oil and vitamin E appear to improve movement disorders in children with dyspraxia.

- Prevent deadlock grafts used in kidney dialysis. Oral administration of fish oil prevents clotting in hemodialysis grafts.

- Effective in improving psoriasis. There is some evidence that fish oil (intravenous administrated) may reduce severe symptoms of psoriasis, but it seems that oral administration of fish oil has no effect on psoriasis.

- Lowering high cholesterol. Scientists believe that fish oil can lower cholesterol. There is some evidence that use of vitamin B12 with fish oil could increase its ability to lower cholesterol.

- Stimulate appetite associated with cancer. The use of high doses of fish oil seems to slow down weight loss in some patients with cancer. Researchers believe that their food appetite is stimulated as fish oil positively affect their mood and fight depression.

- Treatment of asthma. Some research suggests that fish oil may reduce asthma in infants and young children when it is taken by pregnant women in advanced stages of pregnancy.

Moreover, fish oil appears to improve air flow, relieves cough and reduces the need for medication in some children with asthma. However, treatment with fish oil seems to not offer the same benefits to children.

Safety of fish oil use

Fish oil is said to be safe for most people, including pregnant and breastfeeding women when taken in small doses.

You may have some questions about safety when fish oil is used in high doses, as might form blood clots and may increase bleeding risk.

Large quantities of fish oil could decrease the immune system and body’s ability to fight infection. This aspect should worry the people who are using drugs to boost immune system function, elderly and people who have had an organ transplant.

High doses of fish oil will be taken only under medical supervision. Fish oil can cause side effects, including belching, bad breath, heartburn, nausea, loose stools, skin rashes and nosebleeds.

Fish oil is recommended to be given with meals to lessen these effects. Consumption of fish oil in some dietary sources may be unreliable.

Some types of meat of fish (shark, macron, salmon) may be contaminated with mercury and other toxic industrial chemicals in the environment. Supplements of fish do not contain these contaminants.

Precautions and warning signs

- It is recommended that fish oil to be taken by those suffering from liver disease, considering that it might increase the risk of bleeding.

- Some people may be allergic to seafood and could show allergy when using fish oil. No reliable information demonstrating that those with allergies to seafood can suffer from allergies to fish, but you should be caution in taking fish oil supplements.

- Use of fish oil may increase symptoms of bipolar disorder.

- Use of fish oil may worsen some of the manifestations of depression.

- There are some concerns stating that high doses of fish oil may make it more difficult to control blood sugar.

- Fish oil may lower blood pressure, but also to give a bad influence to blood pressure for the people who are treated with drugs to lower blood pressure.

- Large doses of fish oil can reduce immunity to people with HIV / AIDS.

- Some research suggests that fish oil may increase the risk of irregular heartbeats in patients with an implanted defibrillator. Avoid eating fish if you fall into this category.

- There are some concerns about the fact that fish oil may increase cancer risk in people with familial adenomatous polyposis.
