Football Players Can Be At Increase Risk for Stroke

Many young adults are now inclined of indulging themselves into different kinds of sports which includes physically demanding activities. Some of these include: basketball, volleyball, swimming and football. Sports are generally considered good for health because of the exercises involved when playing these sports. Thus, this increases the blood flow on the vessels of the body, increasing the supply of nutrients needed by the body.

Also, sports make the body of these athletes to be toned, leading to a healthier and fit body. However, recently, there are certain reports which puts drawback among individuals who are into sports such as marathon and football, although there are no claims that these sports are generally unhealthy.

In fact, according to anew study which was published in the Journal of Child Neurology (JCN), young individuals who are into the sport known as football can be of higher risk in developing stroke.

Stroke is a cerebrovascular disease considered as a medical emergency. It is caused by either an obstruction of blood vessel supplying blood to the brain or a break of the blood vessels. The obstruction of the blood leads to a cut off of the blood supply causing damage to the part of the brain. Same mechanism goes when the blood vessels rupture causing decreased blood supply to the brain. Some of its clinical manifestations include: sudden severe headache with no known cause, sudden trouble walking, and dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, and sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg.

The new study involved the analysis and examination of data gathered from football players who had stroke during their teenage years. Researchers found out that those young football players are actually of increase risk for developing stroke because of the presence of potential health risks which can be considered contributory to the development of stroke. These risk factors include: use of anabolic steroids, use of highly caffeinated energy drinks, repeated neurological injury, an increase of hyperventilation, and an increase in obesity of young players

Moreover, the factor which can increase the health risk for up to two folds is obesity because of the biological changes that is accompanied with increase body weight such as hypertension, increase blood cholesterol. These factors must be considered in order to help these football players lessen their risk of developing stroke in the future.
