Using sleep apnea masks is one effective way of relieving oneself from the threats of sleep apnea and snoring. There are a lot of masks that one can use to treat sleep apnea and there are several sleep apnea masks that have become popular to many people with sleep apnea.

One of them is the CPAP mask. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. It is a mask which is connected to an equipment which provides continuous supply of air to the person while sleeping. Nasal masks are also common and these masks work by keeping the airways open, preventing the side effects such as snoring.

However, using these sleep apnea masks has its own drawbacks, too. When sleep apnea masks become too uncomfortable for one’s use, the person may easily give up on using the mask which will lead to failure in treating the said condition. Sleep apnea masks come in different sizes such as small, medium and large—depending on one’s facial size. Sometimes, wearing these masks may seem comfortable at first but as time pass, these may not fit well into your face.

Many experts say that the trick in getting the correct size of mask is to choose a mask which is one size smaller than the usual size. This will ensure that the sleep apnea mask will snugly fit into your face. However, if the same thing still happens, buying a new set of mask is advisable. It would be extremely and annoying and purpose defeating to wake up every hour or so just to fix the snugness of the mask in the face.

Skin Irritation Due To Pressure of Sleep Apnea Masks

Dry skin and irritation may occur with continuous use of sleep apnea masks. This is due to the exposure of the skin to pressurized air. As such, the skin may become dry and more prone to damage to the skin integrity like developing rashes, redness, and the likes. In worst cases, pressure sores can occur to the areas where the edges of the sleep apnea masks make contact with.

To prevent this from happening, cleaning the sleep apnea masks regularly is highly advisable. Because pressurized air can lead to moisture in the surfaces of the mask, bacterial growth may be promoted and may further lead to infection and irritation. Cleaning these masks with the use of running water or saline solution is advisable, instead of using alcohol based solutions. Alcohol based solutions can damage the make-up of these masks.

Also, you can moisturize your face well; especially the area which will be covered by these masks, before applying to make sure you can control the dryness.

Sleep apnea masks are important methods which can help relieve the dreadful effects of sleep apnea and snoring. However, like any other forms of treatments, using these masks has its drawbacks too.
