How Can My Child Be Treated From Sleep Apnea?

Recommend to others!

You have to be mindful if your kid is snoring at night, most especially if you have noticed that these snoring episodes have been going on for the past few days or weeks. Surely, this isn’t something normal. While most people believe that snoring is just a normal occurrence in the evening like how the owls hoot during the night, well you might be getting it all wrong.

Snoring, especially in children, has been found out to be accompanied with sleep apnea (in about 10-20% of the cases). Sleep apnea is an occurrence when a kid suddenly stops or pauses from breathing for an abnormally long period of time. Most often, these may lead to gasping for air making them wake up from sleep.

There are sleep apnea treatments that your child may take on to stop these incidences from happening every night. As a concerned parent, you have to be constantly monitoring your kid and see to it that these sleep apnea treatments are well implemented:

Nasal Sprays

Most often than not, sleep apnea and snoring among children occurs when a kid has cough, colds or nasal congestion. With these situations, a child’s airway is not that clear enough and mucosal debris may be present along the way. A nasal spray is basically a solution which one sprays inside the nostrils to make the airway clear. This will lead to a proper flow of air into the lungs.

Nasal Decongestants

These medications may be given over the counter but be sure to see if these are safe for children to take. Nasal decongestants reduce the stuffiness inside your nose and may lead to proper breathing during sleep.

These may also be called mouth-guards. Such instruments are placed inside the mouth to prevent the contact of the throat muscles and structures in the airway. These instruments are custom made by an orthodontist. However, these forms of sleep apnea treatment are not much prioritized as these may cause discomfort.

Avoid Watching TV or Using Computer Before Sleeping

If we expose our kids with TV shows and computer right before they go to sleep, they have the tendency to absorb these stimuli that they have been presented with. These stimuli may stay with them even during sleep and may lead to snoring and unrest during sleep. When we snore, there are more chances for us to experience sleep apnea.

Boost the Immune System

While boosting your immune system is not a direct way of curing sleep apnea, it is a healthy indirect and long term method of treating the condition. It does by lessening the chances of acquiring cough, colds and nasal decongestion which causes snoring and sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a concerning condition, most especially if your kid is experiencing it. However, as a parent, there are many things that you can do to prevent it from happening to your lovely kids. Be sure you consult your pediatrician first to make sure you are doing the right thing to your kids and have the proper prescriptions, should you need them.
