Food poisoning is a result of bad hygienic food which is bacteria infected. This faulty handling of food can take place at home but mostly occurs when you have food outside as it is more susceptible to infection.

The symptoms of food poisoning are more or less nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramping. Mostly food poisoning is a mild illness but sometimes due to the high level of contamination in the food it could prove to be fatal.

Some of the home remedies to treat food poisoning are:

  • It is important to prevent dehydration. Drinks fluids frequently to avoid worsening the illness into diarrhea which could result in fluid depletion and dehydration which could be life threatening.
  • Health specialists believe that diarrhea should not be stopped by taking medications as diarrhea is a natural process of eliminating the toxins. You should try to limit diarrhea by avoiding fatty foods and dairy items, by frequent intake of fluids to avoid dehydration, avoid caffeinated drinks as it also leads to dehydration.
  • Vomiting is a healthy process of eliminating the toxin or bacteria. A cup of ginger tea or honey could calm a nauseated stomach.

The right time to consult a doctor is:

  • When nausea, vomiting and diarrhea lasts for more than 2 days.
  • If the person affected is younger than 3 year old
  • If the abdominal symptoms are associated with a fever.
  • If other people who ate the same food are also sick.
  • If anything you eat or drink is thrown out by your body.
  • If the person has any other illness.
  • If a person runs a fever of 101 degree
  • If the person’s stomach or abdomen swells.
  • The skin and the eye become yellow.
  • The person faces difficulty in breathing, speaking or swallowing.
  • The person has stopped urinating or if the color of his urine has deepened.
  • If the sharp or cramping pain does not relieve even after an hour.
  • If the person vomits blood or starts having bloody bowel movements.
