HPV Vaccine for Men

Recommend to others!

Certain diseases are now eradicated because of the effectiveness and efficacy of vaccines being used to prevent infection. These vaccines are administered to a certain population who need it most, especially the children. Today, another vaccine has been into the mainstream because of its capability to halter the development of cervical cancer among women. This vaccine is known as the HPV vaccine which can boost and enhance the immune system of a person against the cervical cancer causing virus – the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

HPV vaccine is usually given to the general women population to decrease their risk for acquiring cervical cancer. This is especially given to those considered as highly risk groups of women such as those sexually active women, and sex workers. However, a new recommendation was released that HPV vaccine should also be given to the male population in an attempt to decrease the cases of cervical cancer, according to a government panel.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) released new recommendations regarding the target population of HPV vaccination. According to the panel, routine administration of HPV vaccine should also be given to the male population, specifically, boys who belong to the age group of 11 and 12 years must be routinely vaccinated, also including those males aged 13 to 21 years who have not completed the 3 shots of vaccine.

The said agency also said that “genital human papillomavirus (also called HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). There are more than 40 HPV types that can infect the genital areas of males and females. These HPV types can also infect the mouth and throat. Most people who become infected with HPV do not even know they have it.”

HPV is not the same as herpes or HIV (the virus that causes AIDS). These are all viruses that can be passed on during sex, but they cause different symptoms and health problems.

This new recommendation is facing a lot of hurdles because of the issue on the acceptance of HPV vaccine among the general population. The administration of HPV vaccine started back in 2006, where the target population is women who aged between 11 and 26 years old. However, the number of females who avail the shots are very few and limited. This is because of the confusion and wrong connotation of parents that the vaccines can cause promiscuous behavior and other side effects.

The health personnel will have to do extra effort today in order to have both female and male population vaccinated. Expert says that the new recommendation is an extensive measure of the government and the health sector to decrease the cases of cervical cancer including as well other diseases which are caused by the HPV virus.

In conclusion, the committee claimed that the benefits of the new recommendation among the general population is that not only the males will have a protection against HPV-related diseases such as genital warts and some other malignancies,  but also it is a measure to indirectly protect the females from acquiring the virus which can cause cervical cancer.
