Doctors and scientists are busy since many years in search of the causes of rising trend of fatal disease of liver cancer. Mayo Clinic Proceedings in its January issue had published two of the reports submitted through its two clinical studies told that rise in hepatocellar carcinoma (HCC) had tripled the risk of liver cancer in USA in the past thirty years and is accompanied with a low recovery rate of not more than 12 % on its being detected lately.

“The studies illuminate the importance of identifying people with risk factors in certain populations to help catch the disease in its early, treatable stages,” said W. Ray Kim, M.D., a specialist in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and principal investigator of one study.

The records of Rochester Epidemiology Project have been investigated by the research group of Dr. Kim for studying the reports of inpatient and outpatients of liver cancer of the country as a whole. The found higher occurrence ratio of HCC cases i.e. .69 per million of population than over all data collected by the National Cancer Institute i.e. .55 per million of population. It has also been detected through studies that earlier liver cancer was caused due to a disease called cirrhosis by the consumption of alcohol is now caused more by the infection of hepatitis C.

“The liver scarring from hepatitis C can take 20 to 30 years to develop into cancer,” Dr. Kim says. “We’re now seeing cancer patients in their 50s and 60s who contracted hepatitis C 30 years ago and didn’t even know they were infected.”

Though a low percentage of 11% cases of fatty liver cancer are caused due to obesity, according to Dr. Kim, but it was expected to increase rapidly as per the epidemic trend of obesity in the population came to his knowledge. In one more study of Minnesota, where more than 50,000 Somalis intruded in last twenty years, it is found with higher risk of HCC as these East Africans inhabitants have higher levels of hepatitis B.

Thus, doctors and scientists are very much worried about the increasing trends of liver cancer cases in the population of USA since last three decades due to one cause or another as earlier it was caused by cirrhosis, a disease acquired by the consumption of alcohol but now it is found more to be caused by the existence of hepatitis C as well as hepatitis B.
