Jock Itch (Tinea Cruris) is a skin infection and type of ringworm that primarily have an effect on the skin of genitals, scrotum, inner thighs and buttocks as these areas are usually moist, warm and prone to itching.

Is Jock Itch Contagious?

Jock Itch is highly contagious with sexual activities being the prime cause of transmission. Other ways that a jock itch can spread is by touching, rubbing, hugging, hands shaking and scratching the infected area. Sharing undergarments, clothes, towels, swimming costumes and handkerchiefs can spread the infection. Public places like swimming pools and gyms play a major role in the spread of tinea fungus.

Jock Itch Causes

Jock itch develops mainly in the moist and warm areas of the body like the groin, inner thighs, buttocks and surrounding skin. Obese individuals and those who sweat profusely are more at risk of developing jock itch. The infection can spread as a result of sharing clothes, using public lockers, swimming pools and gyms.

Persons with suppressed immune system are more prone to getting infected with jock itch. Some of the medical conditions that suppress the immune system are HIV/AIDS, chemotherapy, diabetes and hepatitis.

Some foods like yeast, lactose, fructose and gluten also cause jack itch in the individuals who have intolerance towards these foods.

Heat, humidity, friction combined with insufficient circulation of blood and oxygen are some other reasons for jock itch.

Jock Itch Symptoms

The initial symptoms of jock itch are mild recurring itching in areas like groin, inner thighs and buttocks. This itching turns into burning feelings and scratches. Ring-shaped rashes are seen which later turn bumpy and dry. In some cases, even pus is noticed.

In some extreme cases of jock itch, the affected part of the skin is discolored resulting in hyperpigmentation, a condition where the skin gets darker. At times, blisters and small hairless patches are seen at the infected area. Check out for further information on –  Jock itch Pictures

Jock Itch Treatment & Cure

Jock itch can be treated by anti-fungal medications and ointments which contain ciclopirox, terbinafine, Naftifine, ciclopirox, oxiconazole, micatin and lotrimin. Glucocorticoid steroids sooth the itching and when used along with anti-fungal agents, prevents infections caused by secondary bacteria.

Here are some self-help ways on how to treat jock itch:

Use soaps containing coconut oil instead of antibacterial soaps.

Cleaning with plain water and applying petroleum-based jelly to the infected part reduces the burning sensation.

Applying a mixture of warm water and apple cedar vinegar or lemon juice helps in restoring the skin layer and also suppresses the smell.

Avoid tight clothes that may result in heavy sweating and keep the infected area open as it helps in fighting jock itch.

Antifungal creams, powder or sprays meant especially for jock itch provide ample relief.

Jock itch isn’t incurable but should be treated immediately with home remedies and OTC medications. If ignored for a longer time, it can even lead to permanent scars and chronic disfiguring.

  2. Posting this for the world because I found help on-line. Mine was as bad as any because I am in an out of a hot tub with damp shorts and sweaty groin area. 1 week later I am cured with dark color slowly going away as skin heals. First day of research I made a paste of non-fat yogurt with live bacteria (Trader Joes) Baking Soda and mashed garlic. Applied to inner thighs wherever rash was. Allowed to dry under fan with legs spread. It is important to excessively expose area during healing with fans and in the sun if possible. Keep dry! Second day, I started a routine of washing area with sudsy anti bacteria hand soap by hand because area is too tender for wash towel. Then softly pat dry and liberally apply Apple Cider Vinegar & water (1/4 cup ACV to 1 cup water) and let air dry. after skin drys apply wet Yogurt like a cooling cream to rash area whenever you can and repeat wash, vinegar, yogurt steps daily for 1 week. First the itch goes away, then the discomfort, then any open sores heal, then the skin heals itself. Also, eat yogurt every day to keep healthy bacteria in your body. Start exercising after recovery to reduce skin folds and begin your new life.
