A Migraine headache is a severe throbbing or pulsing pain in one side or both sides of the head. The pain is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to sound and light. Migraines are very commonly seen these days and there are various trigger elements that cause migraine attacks like stress, anxiety, emotional disorders and hormonal imbalances. However diet plays a very important role in triggering or controlling migraine.

Let us first look at various foods that trigger migraine pain. But you must remember that not all the sufferers are sensitive to the foods listed below.

  1. Foods that contain the chemical tyramine are often the main triggers of migraine attacks. Tyramine is mainly found in foods that are fermented like aged cheese, alcohol, red wine processed meat, yogurt, soy sauce.
  2. Preserved foods and food additives that contain nitrates and nitrites also cause migraine attacks.
  3. Monosodium glutamate that is commonly found in Chinese foods and other snack foods like frozen foods and potato chips is also found to trigger migraine.
  4. Caffeine, chocolate, peanuts and other seeds, fruits like ripe banana, papaya, pineapples, raspberries, kiwi fruit, citrus fruits, egg plant, spinach, chicken liver, fish, beef and pork are also causes of migraines.

    Good food plays a major role in controlling migraines. The various foods that help in preventing migraine attacks are below.

    1. Foods like lentils, oatmeal, beans and pulses that have a low glycaemic index are very beneficial for migraine sufferers. These foods stabilize the blood sugar levels which is very helpful in preventing migraine pain.
    2. One of the main causes of migraine or any headache is dehydration. You must take plenty of water like 10-12 glasses a day.
    3. Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, sardine and tuna help prevent migraine.
    4. Magnesium rich foods like legumes, dark green leafy vegetables, whole grains, some nuts and fish are very good for migraine pain.
    5. The herb ginger is very beneficial in preventing migraine. It cures nausea associated with migraine attacks. Drinking ginger tea or taking ginger biscuits everyday can greatly reduce the frequency of migraine attacks.
