More and More Teens Consuming Alcohol and Drugs

Alcoholism and drug addiction are problems of the society mostly seen and observed among adults. However, as time pass by, this health problem is not only seen among the adults, it is also as well observed among the teenagers, and the problem now is that there is an increasing numbers of teenagers who are into heavy alcohol drinking and drug use. This is bothering because when started at a very young age, it can lead to other health problems in the long run. In fact, there are more than a third of American teens who are engage themselves in alcohol drinking and drug use, according to a new study.

The new study which was issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry, tackled about the health problem that United States can face especially among American teenagers. The study claims that about a third of American teenagers are now going into heavy alcohol drinking and use of drugs. The study participants who were involved in the said study were composed of about more than 72,000 American teenagers who belong to the age group between 12 and 17. These teenagers took part in the National Survey on Drug Use and Health from year 2005 to 2008.

According to the National Institutes of Health, “for most adults, moderate alcohol use is not harmful. However, nearly 17.6 million adults in the United States are alcoholics or have alcohol problems.”

“Alcoholism carries many serious dangers. Heavy drinking can increase the risk of certain cancers. It can cause damage to the liver, brain and other organs. It can cause birth defects. It increases the risk of death from car crashes and other injuries as well as the risk of homicide and suicide,” further says the organization.

The study findings show that out of the72, 000 American teenagers surveyed, about 32 per cent of them said that they are into alcohol drinking, 19 per cent claimed that they were using drugs, and about 15 per cent of the teenagers reveal that they are both into alcohol drinking and use of drugs. Furthermore, the researchers found out that among the ethnic groups in US, those Native American teenagers were the most likely group to consume alcohol or take drugs; this is amounting to about 48 per cent of teenagers who admitted that they have engaged themselves into alcohol drinking and drug use in the past. Also, the researchers had discovered that the most widely used drug by these teenagers is Marijuana which is tantamount to about 13 per cent of teenagers using it, and it is followed by 7 per cent of teens who use narcotic painkillers.

Moreover, according to lead study author Li-Tzy Wu, a professor in the department of psychiatry of behavioral sciences at Duke University Medical Center, she said: “These findings call for efforts to identify and expand prevention measures that are culturally effective and address the quality and acceptability of treatment for adolescents with substance use problems.”
