Mothers who are pregnant necessitate a special type of care because of the fact that the mother is carrying inside her a baby which has a life. Certain pre-natal care must be observed among pregnant mothers in order to make sure that the health of the baby inside their womb is doing good and that when the time comes that the baby is born in the outside world, the baby’s condition will be healthy. There are many considerations that a mother must look into especially those factors which can actually influence the baby inside her womb. Some of these considerations include: lifestyle, nutrition, and work.

In fact, according to a new study, one of the considerations that mothers must look into is their weight. This is because the mother’s weight before and during pregnancy can actually take an effect of the baby’s weight.

The new study which was published in the journal Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica (AOGS) involved the analysis and examination of 58,383 pregnant mothers who took part on the Mother and Child Study which was conducted by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health dated back in year 2000 to 2007. The research team which was led by Unni Mette Stamnes Koepp of the Department of Pediatrics at Soerlandet Hospital and the University of Oslo, Norway, deemed to assess the association between the weight of the mothers before and during the pregnancy, and the weight of their babies.

Upon the analysis of data, the researchers get the Body Mass Index (BMI) of the mothers. Researchers found out that the weight of the babies of the study participants goes along with the weight of the mothers before and during pregnancy. This means that when the weight of the mothers during their pre-pregnant state is increasing, the birth weight of their babies also increases. Also, researchers noted that when the weight of the mother during pregnancy increases, the birth weight of their babies increases as well.

Moreover, the researchers go into specifics of the study, and the investigators found out that an increase of one kilogram in the weight of the mother before pregnancy actually increases the birth weight with about 22.4 grams. And an increase in the weight during pregnancy of about 10 kilograms increases the birth weight with 224 grams.
