Sinus congestion and sinusitis – remedies

If a person has symptoms that indicate sinusitis, it is important go to the doctor. Untreated acute sinusitis can lead to serious or chronic infections. Also, some people may be prone to sinus infections because they have weakened immune systems.

This is an area of debate. Many advocates of conventional medicine believe that some food sensitivities not cause sinus congestion or sinusitis, although this is a common approach for alternative medicine practitioners.

Foods covered may include milk, wheat, oranges and sugar, because they believe that these foods stimulate the production of mucus. About sugar, these alternative medicine experts say that this food has a negative effect on immune function.

Nasal irrigation

Nasal irrigation, sinus rinse or sinus lavage is a simple alternative procedure recommended by practitioners to improve chronic sinusitis. Nasal irrigation is a procedure that can be done at home and involves the use of salt water (sea water) for rinsing and draining nasal passages.

Although nasal irrigation is sometimes recommended by doctors especially for post nasal leakage and to prevent sinus infections and allergic rhinitis (often called allergies or high fever) is also used in alternative medicine for the same conditions as a general practice prevention and cleaning.

8 natural ways to relieve sinus pain immediately

Fortunately, there are some safe and natural remedies as alternative to drug use.

1. Studies have shown that up to 70% of patients with chronic sinusitis have environmental allergies. So it makes sense to try to avoid, if possible, passive smoking, traffic exhaust, dry air and chemicals in your own home or workplace. These people should remove from their houses the dust by vacuuming carpets frequently.

2. Moderate exercise helps to boost immunity. Even walking for 30 minutes 3-4 times a week can be very effective – although you should avoid walking outdoors when pollen is high in the environment, as this factor may exacerbate the problem.

3. Exclude potentially allergenic foods and diet that favors the creation of mucus, like eggs, fatty or fried foods, pasta, sugar, chocolate, beer and any other food that contains additives.

4. Eat more products that clear the sinuses and help liquefy mucus. These include foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, salads, fish and hot chicken soup. Foods that are known to be particularly beneficial are garlic, onion, chilli, ginger, horseradish, mustard and pineapple.

5. Drink 2-3 liters of mineral water, hot herbal teas and drinks containing lemon, daily.

6. For fast relief of symptoms, mix one teaspoon of grated horseradish or fresh root with lemon juice, hot water and sweeten with a little honey; sip the mixture slowly.

7. Inhalation is a practiced and tested way to unplug blocked sinuses. Add 10 drops of olbas oil to a bowl of water having a temperature close to the boiling, cover your head with a towel, close your eyes and inhale the steam emitted for 10 minutes.

8. Nasal washing is an old treatment. Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of hot water, keep covered one nostril, and then try to pull the fluid on the opposite nostril. Repeat the action using the other nostril.
