Many parents with children who are over active are bothered about their children’s health. Having an over active child may not necessarily mean that a child is having a disorder called the Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), the child must be further assessed and diagnosed before concluding that an over active child is having ADHD. Today many queries and issues, especially safety issues regarding the treatment modalities of ADHD using medications arise. But, the use of ADHD medications is okay and safe for use, according to the affirmation given by Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder of a child which can be diagnosed at an earlier age and can pursue until adolescence. It commonly affects about 3 to five per cent of children across the globe. According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in order to say that a child is having ADHD, he should be continuously manifesting the following behaviour: have a hard time paying attention, can be easily distracted from schoolwork or play, be in constant motion or unable to stay seated, squirm or fidget, talk too much, and act and speak without thinking.

The study which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that cardiovascular problems are not related with the use of ADHD medications. The study involved analysis and examination of data gathered from about more than one million children and young adults who ages 2 to 24 years old. The drugs which was tested and used in the study include stimulants amphetamine products, and methylphenidate or Ritalin – the most commonly used drug to treat ADHD.

According to FDA, the use of ADHD medications is safe. For about more than 2 millions of individuals who are taking these ADHD medications, there were only about seven (7) health problems which are related to cardiovascular problems. Also, taking any medications can cause side effects, but having the risk of developing any cardiovascular disease from solely using ADHD medications is very low and insignificant.

Furthermore, FDA suggests that in order to prevent any untoward effects of the drug, parents should consult the health care professionals and use the medications according to the professional prescribing label. In addition, it is also important to know the medication’s interaction with other drugs which can cause other unexpected effects.

According to the National Institutes for Mental Health, “two to three percent of children have ADHD.  This means that in a typical classroom at least one child is ADHD.  The NIMH estimates that about 2 million children in the United States have ADHD.
