The cause of eczema is unknown, although occasionally can be associated with a drug allergy. Nummular eczema is more common in winter and is often associated with dry skin. Extreme temperatures and certain types of allergies increase nummular eczema symptoms.

This type of eczema should not be confused with atopic dermatitis, a more common encountered skin problem, which may be an allergy. Unfortunately, there is no cure for nummular eczema. However, there are effective ways to control it.

Among them prescription issued ointments containing cortisone would be the best alternative. If a person uses the drug for a long period of time or on large areas of the body, he needs regular skin exams.

Creams that contain a significant amount of cortisone will be applied locally, by massaging the skin. Keep in mind that you should use a thin layer and should not be applied on face, armpits, groin or rectal area. In most cases it is sufficient to apply the ointment once a day.

If scaly nummular eczema does not improve by doing this, we recommend adding coal tar in cream containing cortisone. Considering that areas that manifest nummular eczema are prone to infections (especially staphylococcal), it is recommended the use of oral antibiotics for a week or two.
