New England Journal of Medicine had declared in its latest edition that untested herpes vaccine, to cure various forms of herpes viruses that may cause genital diseases, had saved several women. It was found partly successful with simple type 1 (HSV-1) virus of herpes but remained unsuccessful to treat the women with type 2 (HSV-2) viruses. Nearly 42% of the women suffering with the type 1 virus of herpes, who got the untested vaccine for genital herpes, got controlled than the rest of them who were suffering with type 2 viruses of herpes.

“There is some very good news in our findings. We were partially successful against half of the equation – protecting women from genital disease caused by HSV-1,” said Robert Belshe, M.D., director of the Saint Louis University Center for Vaccine Development and lead author of the study.

“It’s a big step along the path to creating an effective vaccine that protects against genital disease caused by herpes infection. It points us in the direction to work toward making a vaccine that works on both herpes simplex viruses.”

HSV-2, one of the viruses of herpes family, causes blisters and lesions in the genital regions whereas HSV-1, the other member of this family, becomes the source of sores on the lips and in the mouth as well as increases the chances of effecting with genital diseases. At present, the genital disease, one of the common infectious diseases, engulfed more than 25% women in USA which has no standard vaccine or treatment to cure it permanently. HSV becomes the permanent part of the body, it enters in to and causes several fatal neurological diseases to the person infected with it, helps in spreading HIV virus sexually and even cause death to the new born babies from the infected mothers.

“We were surprised by these findings,” said Belshe, who also is a professor of infectious diseases and immunology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. “We didn’t expect the herpes vaccine to protect against one type of herpes simplex virus and not another. We also found it surprising that HSV-1 was a more common cause of genital disease than was HSV-2.”

Thus, though both the herpes viruses spread through contacting genital parts directly as genitals to genitals, mouth to mouth and mouth to genitals but HSV-1 is the most effective virus to cause genital diseases than HSV-2. The untested vaccine had shown its positive effect on HSV-1, which showed the progress of researches for genital herpes vaccine.
