What We Need To Know About Prozac vs. Pristiq

Prozac (Fluoxetine) and Pristiq (Desvenlafaxine) are both anti-depressants. However, apart from treating depression, there are also other diseases which these drugs can cure. Prozac, for one, can also treat eating disorders, panic attacks and OCD.

Prozac is an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor), which means this drug regulates the amount of Serotonin inside our brain. Pristiq is an SSNRI (Selective Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor) which basically works the same way as an SSRI, however only with the additional feat of controlling Norepihnephrine levels.

Contraindications Before Taking Prozac vs. Pristiq

These are the following conditions which need to be considered before being given the prescription to take Prozac:

-          A personal or family history of Bipolar disorder;

-          Diabetes Mellitus;

-          Seizures and convulsions;

-          Liver conditions;

-          Other psychotic disorders;

-          Previous suicidal attempts; and

-          Pregnancy and lactation.

The following conditions are not compatible in taking Pristiq:

-          Kidney and liver disorders;

-          Heart diseases;

-          Pregnancy and lactation;

-          Bipolar disorders; and

-          Suicidal attempts.

Special Precautions When Taking Prozac vs. Pristiq

Avoid taking the following drugs when you are taking Prozac for your depression:

-          Similar drugs with Fluoxetine;

-          Diet medications;

-          Procarbazine;

-          MAOIs;

-          Thioridazine;

-          Pimozide; and

-          Tryptophan.

However, if you are taking Pristiq, the following drugs need to be taken away of your medication list:

-          Pain relievers like NSAIDs and Aspirin;

-          Migraine drugs (Triptan Drugs);

-          Diet medications;

-          Medications for heart disorders;

-          MAOIs;

-          Anticoagulant drugs;

-          Alcoholic beverages; and

-          Amphetamines.

Side Effects When Taking Prozac vs. Pristiq

When taking Prozac, these side effects may happen:

-          Allergic reaction to the drugs;

-          Palpitations;

-          Seizures;

-          Trouble concentrating;

-          Weakness and body fatigue;

-          Tremors;

-          Nausea and Vomiting;

-          Trouble sleeping; and

-          Flu-like symptoms.

Pristiq can give rise to the following side effects:

-          Seizures and convulsions;

-          Allergic reactions to the drug;

-          High blood pressure;

-          Hallucinations;

-          Sexual dysfunction;

-          Easy bleeding and bruising;

-          Hyperactivity and loss of control; and

-          Nausea and Vomiting.
