Skin Discoloration—What Are They?

Recommend to others!

You wouldn’t want to be spotted and compared to a zebra or a giraffe or any other spotted creature! But there are really instances when your skin becomes so discolored in scraps that it leads to a patchy appearance. This moment can be publicly humiliating and you wouldn’t even have the simplest bit of gut to go out and present yourself without putting on any covers… good thing if these patchy areas are on your arms or shoulders. But what if these appear on your face?

What Is Discoloration of Skin Causes?

Skin discolorations are of various types.  It is important to know what these discolorations are called and where these can occur commonly on our body.

-          Moles are one of the most common discolorations of skin. They are called “naevi” medically and these may appear in light brown to black in color. They may also come out as a flat or raised area in the skin. Moles result from the coagulation of the natural pigment-giving substance in our skin, melanin.

-          Birthmarks are also common discolorations of the skin. These may be called by many terms depending on their size, color, shape, etc. Commonly, these birthmarks are called hemangiomas or portwine stain. These birthmarks are commonly due to blood vessel deformities in confined areas which become visible from above the skin surface.

-          Melasma or the increase in the pigmentation occur due to hormonal changes and is common among women, especially those who are pregnant or those who had menopause.

-          Freckles are also common discoloration of the skin, most especially in the face, shoulder or neck area. These freckles may be due to genetic predisposition and exposure to sunlight.

-          Vitiligo is another condition which affects the skin severely in that the person suffering from this disease will get white patches everywhere around the body because of loss of skin pigment in certain areas.

What Is Discoloration of Skin on Face?

Many causes of skin discoloration on face include sun exposure, pollution, improper hygiene and unhealthy diet. In some cases, the overuse and abuse of cosmetic products can lead to the development of skin discoloration.

What Is Discoloration of Skin on Back and Neck?

In terms of the neck and back, the same old “sun exposure” is the main cause. Continuous and prolonged exposure to the sunlight’s UV rays lead to the accumulation of melanin in exposed skin areas.

Apart from these areas, there are other body parts where skin discoloration can occur—especially in areas which are commonly exposed to sweat which may cause dermatitis, fungal infection, and the like.

What Is Discoloration of Skin Treatments?

The use of bleaching agents like hydroquinone containing soaps can help brighten the skin and make it look fair and free from blemishes and discoloration. Several laser treatments can also remedy this problem which many people have, but this is not to say that discoloration of skin is a dangerous condition. Skin discolorations most often than not, do not cause any danger to a person’s health and well being.
