Majority of the women complain that they get tired very easily during their pregnancy. Of these many might be suffering from additional normal fatigue which is linked with their pregnancy. Many also tend to develop obstructive sleep apnea which is a periodic cessation of breathe when one sleeps. If this sleep apnea is left untreated, it will pose an assortment of health risks for the pregnant women. These health problems may be stroke, high blood pressure and diabetes. Recent research has indicated that pregnant women who suffer from sleep apnea are at an elevated risk of delivering preterm infants or low weight infants.

Sleep apnea occurs when an individual’s airway collapses frequently during sleep. This recurring obstruction of airflow results in low blood-oxygen levels and also strains the heart. The individual can also suffer from a brief disturbance sleep when the brain wakes up in order to breathe. If one does not get this disease treated, it will result in following:

  • Heart attacks
  • Mental decline
  • Heart disease
  • Irregular heart rhythms
  • Diabetes

Individuals with sleep apnea are also at an elevated threat of having a workplace or motor vehicle accident. This is unfortunate that the pregnant women generally do not get tested for sleep apnea as the symptoms are similar to that of normal pregnancy. Pregnant women who are obese before their pregnancy or those who have developed diabetes or high blood pressure during their pregnancy must get assessed for sleep apnea. If a woman is pregnant and suffers from the below mentioned symptoms, then she should consult and talk to her doctor about sleep apnea:

ü  Un-refreshing sleep

ü  Diabetes

ü  Insomnia

ü  Poor Memory

ü  Morning sickness

ü  Daytime sleepiness

ü  High blood pressure

Continuous positive airway pressure is the effective and safest treatment given to the pregnant women to cure sleep apnea.
