Stem Cells for Heart Damage Treatment, Still A Challenge

Improvements in technology have been very significant not only in terms of dealing with daily life’s hassles, but also in the medical field. Many advanced diagnostics, and treatments have been discovered which can help to rapidly and accurately identify individuals suffering from a specific disease, and of course administer immediate and necessary medical intervention. One of this considered advancement is the breakthrough discovery of stem cells which can actually rejuvenate damage cells of the human body. In fact, the use of stem cells have shown significant results when it was used to heal a damaged heart, according to a report.

Stem cells are biological cells which has the potential to develop and grow into different types of cells found throughout the human body.  In other terms, these stem cells are the fundamental cells which can repair the cells for the human body. Many researchers are still in the midst of analyzing and investigating the real role of stem cells and its effectiveness and efficacy in terms of making a human body healthy.

According to the National Institutes of Health Resource for Stem Cell Research, “Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth. In addition, in many tissues they serve as a sort of internal repair system, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential either to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell.”

During the annual meeting of the American Heart Association, three studies were reported that the use of stem cells to revitalize the heart cells which are damaged had produced significant results. .

Two of the three studies tackled about the use of bone marrow stem cells to heal the damage cells of the heart due to certain heart disease. According to the findings of the study, infusion of bone marrow stem cells to individuals who had heart attack can be very significant and may lead to improvements of survivability rate of individuals who had heart attack. The main differences between the two studies conducted were about the specific time period on when will be the administration of bone marrow stem cells will happen. One study claimed that administration of bone marrow stem cells several days after the heart attack is safe and can provide many health benefits in the long run. However, the other research says that the delay of the use of stem cells for about 10 to 20 days is long enough.

On the other hand, the third study look over the use of stem cells which directly came from a patient’s own heart. The findings concluded that the use of cardiac stem cells were effective in terms of improving the heart function of patient’s that once had heart attack.

Moreover, many studies are still gaining evidences with the use of the stem cells, and hopefully in the future, this can lead to another breakthrough treatment for different diseases.
