Top Causes of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is otherwise known as the “Brittle Bone Disease”. Osteoporosis affects people who are above forty years old, those who are female and those with small body built. As a degenerative disorder, this condition affects the elderly by depleting the amount of calcium in the bones. When the amount of calcium inside the bones decrease, the strength of the bones also lessen. This leads to many different complications, most especially pathologic fractures.

Osteoporosis can give rise to other complications like difficulty moving due to the pain that one can feel upon ambulation. A person may also be prone to neurologic damage, most especially when a person gets spinal fracture since osteoporosis affects the spinal vertebrae. And the thing about these fractures is that these may happen even without doing something which can is fracture-causing.

Many people may have the idea that osteoporosis is all about a decrease in calcium intake—however, it is not true all the time. While calcium intake is a big factor in people with osteoporosis, there are also other conditions which can be considered as osteoporosis causes. Here is a list of the most common osteoporosis causes and how we can deal with them.

Aging/ Degeneration. This is the most common cause of osteoporosis, regardless of one’s nationality, built or gender. Rapid bone mass loss happens once a person reaches the age of forty; or even when a person is as young as thirty. When women reach menopause, they also experience a decline in the amount of estrogen in their bloodstream. Estrogen is a female hormone which strengthens the bone’s ability to absorb calcium. As for men, androgen is the hormone responsible for the same function, however, unlike women, androgen does not decrease in amount at such an early point. This is the reason why osteoporosis is more common in elder women than in elder men.

Pre-Existing Diseases. There are diseases which can also lead to the development of osteoporosis. The following are the types of diseases which can lead to such bone disorder:

1. Diseases which affect the Endocrine system- an endocrine hormone responsible for the absorption and release of calcium to and from the bones is released by the Thyroid and the Parathyroid Glands. Defects in these glands are known osteoporosis causes.

2. Diseases which affect the absorption of minerals from the intestine may also be considered osteoporosis causes. When calcium fails to bind for absorption in the bloodstream, there is no way for these calcium deposits to get inside the bones.

Vices Like Smoking and Alcoholism. Smoking is absolutely one of the top osteoporosis cause, not considering the amount of cigarette a person smokes in a day. This is because nicotine impairs the bone’s ability to absorb and retain calcium minerals inside. Although alcohol in small amounts can do well for osteoporosis, too much intake of it can aggravate the condition.

Diet is already considered as a default cause of osteoporosis. With a diet that is low on calcium and Vitamin D, developing osteoporosis is a high possibility. Therefore apart from observing the above mentioned causes and preventing them from occurring, it is also important to boost your body with a therapeutic amount of calcium daily.
