1. Overview


The liver is one of the vital organs of human. It has an essential role in cleaning and detoxification of toxins and harmful substances, but also in transforming ingested food into energy, essential for executing common tasks (walking, moving, running, etc.).

There is a close connection between the foods we eat and liver, because the latter help greatly in digesting the food, secreting bile, which helps break down food. Also, the liver converts amino acids into glucose – main energy source for the brain.

The liver acts as a kind of sieve, helping to sifting or filtering toxins and other harmful substances from the blood. Just as the liver affects the food metabolizing ability and certain types of food can affect its correct functioning.

2. Categories of foods that severely affect liver

Fast-food

Fast food foods affect the body in all of its functions and organs, but are extremely dangerous, especially to the liver.

Most of these preparations contain harmful fats ingredients and food additives. They bombard the body with unnecessary calories (empty, which provides no essential nutrient) forming the body stores fat and sodium.

Given that the liver is responsible in processing fats, frequent consumption of these foods leads to the formation of fat deposits directly into the liver, leading to damage and even block its function.

Foods rich in protein

A high protein diet significantly increases intake of these nutrients in the body, and this often happens after exclusion of other nutrients. This means that people who frequently eat protein products tend to deprive the body of other essential nutrients for health.

Unfortunately, the adoption of such a regime, often in order to lose weight, overloads the liver and damages it, seriously affecting the health of the entire body. The liver has, among other things, the role to metabolize proteins, but when in excess, it must submit 2 times more effort than usual, and so problems can occur at operation.

The protein-rich diet shows high risk for the liver in people who already suffer from liver disease as contributing to the degeneration or worsening of these diseases.


3. Cholesterol foods

Increasing levels of bad cholesterol in the blood increases the risk of developing liver disease. Cholesterol is a type of fat found mostly in foods of animal origin. These fats are found mainly in:
- Red meat, fat;
- Shrimp;
- Egg yolk;
- Cream;
- Margarine;
- Mayonnaise;
- Offal;
- Butter.

For prevention of liver problems, doctors recommend limiting consumption of such foods and increased consumption of food of plant origin:
- Whole grains;
- Fruit;
- Vegetables.

They help lower bad cholesterol levels in the blood and improve liver function.


4. Fatty foods

Fat products are high in calories and help increase blood bad cholesterol, triglycerides and risk of obesity when consumed in excess. All these effects are risk factors for liver disease.

Most harmful for the liver are these fatty foods:
- Lard;
- Margarine;
- Butter;
- Fatty meat;
- Cream;
- Cheese;
- Poultry skin;
- Fries;
- Creamy salad dressings;
- Cakes;
- Pastries;
- Mayonnaise.

Instead, doctors recommend people prone to liver problems conceiving their diet of fruits and vegetables, and healthy cooked dishes (steamed, boiled or grilled ripe).


5. Foods to be limited in the diet

Alcohol

Excess alcohol is bad for your liver. The amount of alcohol recommended to prevent liver problems is of two drinks per day for men and only one for women.

If the diagnosis of liver disease already exists, then any source of alcohol should be avoided completely.

Sweets and foods with high sugar content

Sweets and candy, candy, soft drinks and desserts are high in calories.

Excess calories are a risk factor for obesity, which takes its toll on the health of the liver. They should be eaten in moderation and only occasionally. They can be replaced with fresh fruit, cakes made from natural ingredients and no sugar, yogurt with fruit and other healthy alternatives.

Sodium or salt foods

Excess salt in the body leads not only to water retention and swelling in certain parts of the body (especially the face, hands and feet), but also serious liver problems. Foods containing excessive salt are:
- Sausage;
- Canned vegetables;
- Processed foods;
- Fast-food;
- Salad dressings;
- Chips;
- Instant soups;
- Vegetation and delicate.

Liquids

If the body tends to retain water, it is advisable to reduce the amount of liquid consumed daily.

Water, juices, milk, soups, broths and all foods rich in liquids, including with fruit and vegetables should be eaten in moderation.


6. Foods good for liver health

There are a number of foods that contribute to healthy liver function and seem to be making a balanced diet, nutritionally speaking. These include:
- Acaya berry fruit;
- Whole grains with muesli and nuts;
- Cabbage and cabbage juice;
- Carrot juice;
- Celery;
- Chicory;
- Coleslaw salad;
- Cheese;
- Fruit juices (orange, blackberry, raspberry, grape, pineapple);
- Cottagel cheese;
- Lettuce;
- Flaxseed;
- Plum (prune juice);
- Sauerkraut;
- Sesame seeds;
- Seaweed;
- Soy;
- Brown rice;
- Yogurt.
