Irritable Bowel Syndrome is ironically an understatement! The fact is, suffering from this certain condition could be the most irritating experience you’ll ever have. There are a lot of things associated with irritable bowel syndrome and it is important to be aware of the things that cause this condition, what remedies can we take note of and what foods do we need to take in or avoid in order to prevent the recurrence of such condition.

What Is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome is a condition involving the large intestine (colon). In persons with such condition, the intestines will either take too slow to digest foods in the colon or too fast leading to symptoms of diarrhea and constipation frequently. IBS is also referred to as spastic bowel, spastic colon, irritable colon or functional bowel syndrome. It is important to take note that irritable bowel syndrome and irritable bowel disease are two different conditions since the latter is a general term used to refer to a group of diseases related to the colon.

When Does IBS Take Place?

The irritating thing about IBS is that it can occur at any place, any time of the day. The condition is aggravated most especially when you feel stressed, anxious, on a trip, attending a social gathering where you feel tensed and anxious, etc.

Foods rich in soluble fibers can aid in irritable bowel syndrome especially with the presence of constipation. Fiber adds more bulk to the stool making it easier and smoother to pass. These foods are rich in soluble fiber:

-         Fresh fruits like apple, banana, orange, peach, pineapples, prunes. In fact, almost all fruits contain a significant amount of fiber that can help us attain a healthier digestive system.

-         Vegetable products like broccoli, asparagus, potato, spinach, peas, especially those which are green and leafy are known to be rich in dietary fiber.

-         Fiber rich foods not only include these fruits and vegetables, breads made of oat and healthy grains contain fiber, too, except those containing gluten.

And speaking of gluten, many gluten containing foods are known to trigger and/ or intensify the occurrence of IBS. Gluten is a form of protein found in grains like wheat and barley. These are usually found in breads, pasta and noodles made of such grains. Processed foods are also known to contain gluten, i.e. processed meat, canned goods, etc. Checking the nutrition facts and ingredients is an indispensable practice which you should everyday in the grocery.

Diets for Irritable Bowel Syndrome: What Foods To Avoid?

Milk and other dairy products are identified as common IBS triggers. These foods are hard to digest, thus giving out colon a hard time to process and break down. Also, be sure to avoid spicy, oily, and fatty foods! Aside from the fact that these foods are hard to digest, they also have the tendency to cling to our colon walls.

There are numerous online resources stating the foods which need and need not be taken in case of IBS. All you need is a little of your time and understanding to fully grasp why there is a need to avoid triggering foods and continue eating those which are healthy to the colon.
