What is dietary fiber?
Dietary fiber -called ballast substances-, include all components of vegetable food that your stomach can not digest or absorb. Fiber is often classified into two categories: those that do not dissolve in water (insoluble fiber) and those that are dissolved (soluble fiber).

Insoluble fiber
These fiber emphasize transit through the digestive system and intestinal content increases fecal volume bowl. Thus, it is recommended given to those suffering from constipation or irregular stools. Wheat, bran, nuts and some vegetables are good sources of insoluble fiber.

Soluble Fiber
This type of fiber dissolves in water forming a gelatinous substance. They help lower cholesterol and blood glucose levels. Soluble fiber is found in large quantities in oats, peas, beans, apples, citrus, carrots, barley and psyllium seeds.

Vegetable products contain different amounts of both fiber types. To be beneficial to your health, eat a variety of foods rich in fiber.
