Anxiety is a double-edged sword. It can be beneficial to a person when managed well—but when it becomes uncontrollable; it can lead to negative effects on the person’s physical and social well-being. Anxiety is classified into four categories, mild, moderate, severe and panic anxiety. The first classification, being the lowest form is considered healthy and in fact, it occurs to us almost every day without being aware of it. The three latter forms are not considered healthy… these are health threats.

There are drugs that can be used to fight and lessen the effects of anxiety and many medical professionals agree that when mild anxiety starts to turn moderate, taking anxiolytics or anti-anxiety drugs is recommended. Anxiolytics or more commonly called anti-anxiety drugs are psychoactive, meaning they take effect by modifying our brain chemicals or neurotransmitters responsible for the feeling of anxiety. Xanax (Alprazolam) and Klonopin (Clonazepam) are popular anti-anxiety drugs.

What We Need To Know About Xanax vs Klonopin?

Both Xanax and Klonopin are part of the drug group called Benzodiazepines. These drugs take effect by modifying the amount of neurotransmitters in our brain that lead to clinical signs of anxiety. Both these drugs are used in treating anxiety per se, anxiety related to depression and panic attacks. Klonopin can also be used to treat seizure disorders since it is also a known anti-convulsant.

How Xanax vs Klonopin Need To Be Taken?

Xanax should be taken in the exact dose that was prescribed by the physician. Xanax should be taken with a full glass of water. One thing about Xanax is that it may lead to dependence and one may form a habit of taking Xanax even in situations when it isn’t needed.

Klonopin, on the other hand should also be taken as prescribed. An orally disintegrating form of this drug is also available and that form should not be swallowed; rather it should be allowed to melt inside the mouth while frequently swallowing the dissolved components.

Side Effects That We Need to Watch out for Xanax vs Klonopin

Xanax side effects that one needs to watch out for are the following: extreme behaviors, hyperactivity, depression, urinating less than usual or not at all, jaundice or yellow discoloration of eyes and skin. The same is also true for Klonopin with the addition of difficulty of breathing, chest tightness and seizures.

Special Precautions When Taking Xanax vs Klonopin

Be cautious if a person has a history of drug or alcohol abuse as habit-forming can be more pronounced in such cases. Seizures and other forms of withdrawal symptoms may occur when one abruptly stops taking Xanax. To avoid such thing from happening, the doctor will gradually lessen the dose of Xanax before completely stopping this drug.

Klonopin, on one hand is not for long term use. In fact, no one should take Klonopin for more than 9 weeks as it may pose threats to the liver. Just like Xanax, one should gradually decrease the dose of Klonopin while taking it as it may lead to withdrawal signs and symptoms.

There are other considerations which one needs to know when a person is taking Xanax and Klonopin. Be sure to discuss these matters freely with your physician.
